Indian head massage

Indian head massage is a holistic treatment of massaging acupressure points (known as ‘marma’ points) on the head, neck, shoulders and face. It originates from traditional Ayurveda medicine and has been practised in India for over 2000 years, whereby mothers massage their daughters’ heads weekly to improve the health and condition of their hair. Oil is traditionally used to moisturise the hair, although can be omitted according to client preference. Some of the many benefits of Indian head massage include:

• Relief from headaches and migraines

• Relaxation, which can help with anxiety and depression

• Better sleep through stress reduction

• Stimulation of lymphatic drainage

• Improvement in sinusitis

• Increased energy levels

• Promotes hair growth and condition

There are a few contraindications to Indian head massage, including:

Epilepsy: Indian head massage can can be very relaxing for people with epilepsy, but can occasionally trigger a seizure in sensitive individuals. If you have uncontrolled epilepsy please ensure you have clearance from your neurologist before booking a head massage.

DVT: Indian head massage enhances circulation and may therefore dislodge an existing clot, so is contraindicated if you have a DVT. Another treatment such as Reiki may be given.

Intoxication: While under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a client is not able to give informed consent for a treatment.

Migraines and headaches: Indian head massage can be very beneficial for migraines and headaches, however is not recommended for someone suffering from head pain at the time of their appointment. Please rebook.

Diabetes: Blood circulation is improved in an Indian head massage and may cause a drop in blood sugars. A light snack is recommended a couple of hours before treatment, and again afterwards.

Bacterial, fungal or viral infections: Please rebook once the infection has resolved to avoid transmission to your therapist and other clients.

High / low blood pressure: Generally, an Indian head massage is safe to give to those with blood pressure problems, however if your condition is severe please obtain medical clearance before your appointment.

Spondylitis: An Indian head massage treats the neck and shoulders as well as the head and face. It should therefore be avoided in those who have spondylitis unless you have clearance from your GP, however it is possible to perform the massage omitting the neck and shoulders or using very light massage if preferable.
