Reflexology

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a massage practice which stimulates the body’s healing energy. It is based on the principle that reflex points in the hands, feet and ear are mirrored to each organ, area and structure in the body by meridians, zones or energy channels. Blockages occur in these meridians when a person is sick, and reflexology massage can release these blockages, thus helping the body to heal. It is a holistic therapy whereby the health of the whole person is considered by looking at their physical health, lifestyle and social factors, mental health and environment and how these affect their symptoms. The feet are generally the preferred body part to work on as they ground us to the earth and provide a large surface area on which to work. However, the hands and sometimes the ears can also be used.

As well as helping the body to heal itself, many people find reflexology to be very relaxing and meditative. Those with ticklish feet can also enjoy it as pressure is slowly applied to the feet instead of quick movements.

Pregnancy and reflexology: Reflexology can help prepare your body to conceive. Techniques can be used for both male and female fertility, and support you through IVF treatment. It can also be used to promote a natural labour after 37 weeks. I learned pre, peri and post-natal care techniques during my reflexology training 16 years ago and have recently completed Preconception, Pregnancy and Post-Natal Care Reflexology CPD with the London School of Reflexology. According to this course, clients who have had reflexology during pregnancy generally suffer less pregnancy-related conditions and have a shorter labour.

Power Reflexology: Power reflexology uses a variety of techniques and a new method of working to help clients on a physical, emotional and energetic level. It uses the chakras, endocrine and nervous system to help unblock body armour that has developed as a result of trauma or unfulfilled desire. This can have a positive impact in helping clients move on in their physical or emotional recovery process. Power Reflexology is approved and recommended by the Association of Reflexologists (UK). It is a shorter treatment, taking around 20-30 minutes and can be part of a longer reflexology treatment or part of a Reiki / Indian head massage package.

Contraindications to reflexology:

DVT: Reflexology improves blood circulation, therefore may dislodge an existing clot. An alternative treatment such as Reiki is recommended instead.

Bacterial, fungal or viral infection: Please rebook when the infection has resolved to avoid transmitting it to your therapist and their clients.

Injury to foot: Small cuts to the hand / foot can be covered with a BandAid and worked around. For larger injuries or broken bones, it is recommended to rebook treatment after your hand / foot has healed.

Active bleeding / low platelets: Reflexology enhances blood circulation, therefore is not suitable for people who are experiencing a bleed. (Menstruation is fine, and period pain / PMT symptoms may be helped by reflexology.)
